Dr. James H. Cyriax (1904-1985), M.D., M.R.C.P., F.C.S.P., London, devoted his entire life to the examination and the non-surgical treatment of orthopaedic soft tissue lesions. He succeeded in devising a diagnostic method that, because of its basic simplicity, can be considered as genial, and in which history and clinical examination regain their fullest rights. During years of probation with this method, he moreover discovered a considerable number of locomotor disorders, which were unrecognized and even unthought before. After careful experimenting, he then proposed - for quite some disorders - a direct, efficient and often more economical treatment.
Besides working in private practice, Dr. Cyriax was appointed Honorary Consultant
Physician in Orthopaedic Medicine at St Thomas’s Hospital and at St
Andrew’s Hospital, London. He also was Consultant in Orthopaedic Medicine
to British Airways and the Ministry of Aviation. He was Visiting Professor
in Orthopaedic Medicine at the University of Rochester, Medical Center, New
York, U.S.A., as well as Honorary Member of the relevant American, Czechoslovakian,
French, Irish, Norwegian and Swedish societies. He was also made Fellow of
the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
