A course in orthopaedic medicine: why?

Orthopaedic medicine should be considered a basic science. It forms the foundation on which further knowledge can be based. The information acquired in this course is the prerequisite to immediately evaluate and treat a patient in daily practice – without too many “high specialized skills”. Clinical non-surgical orthopaedics have always been a grossly neglected section in the tuition of doctors and physiotherapists.
Course participants tend to say: “Why didn’t we receive this information much earlier?”

What is the surplus value of a complete course?

The combination of basic and advanced course in one complete education has certain advantages:

After 2½ years of education in the different skills you will master the matter (diagnosis and therapy) in such a way that you are able to approach each clinical situation!

Content of the course

The content of the course is based on the work done by Dr. James Cyriax and on the reference work ‘A System of Orthopaedic Medicine’, 2nd ed., in which some of our teachers have actualized and structured the matter.

Teaching method

Theory
The basic matter is taught “ex cathedra” with the use of computer projection. The advanced matter is partly imparted by means of dialogue between teacher and students.
You have the disposal of a particularly handy workbook, completely adapted to the course and illustrated with schemes, photographs and drawings.
A study book helps you to assimilate the learned matter.

Practice
All examination and treatment techniques are taught. There is sufficient time for repeated practice.

Clinic
The clinical pictures of the different conditions are described in detail and presented schematically.

Verification
The described pathologies are tested by practical experience with ‘mock clinics’, case studies and patient demonstrations.

Visiting lecturers
Visiting lecturers may complete the content of the course with their own approach. In this way a link is made with other systems. The lecturers are chosen dependent on their specialty or on the actuality.

Repetition days
Repetition days can be organized to review the matter by means of quiz, case studies and practical exercises.

Examination
The possibility is offered to take a theoretical and practical examination in basic matter (‘basic examination’) or in advanced matter (‘advanced examination’). The examination is optional, but recommended. It motivates the participant to study and assimilate the subject.

Certificates are granted, dependent on the level

   Certificate of attendance (example)
   Certificate of ‘basic examination’
   Certificate of ‘advanced examination’.

A course for doctors and physiotherapists

In this subject teamwork is important. Doctors and physiotherapists treat the same patients and should therefore speak the same language. Both groups therefore get the same theory. However, they have a different function. Practice takes place in separate groups: doctors with a doctor-teacher and physiotherapists with a physiotherapist-teacher. Learning each others possibilities tightens the bonds and creates appreciation, makes further co-operation easier and increases the mutual confidence.
On request, osteopaths, chiropractors and naprapaths may attend the course.
